What is an .odt file and how does pdf24 tools ODT to PDF read it?

An .odt file is an OpenDocument text document, the default format of LibreOffice Writer: a ZIP package whose content.xml holds paragraphs, headings, lists and tables, with styles for bold, italic and alignment. pdf24 tools ODT to PDF unpacks it in your browser and lays those blocks out on PDF pages.

pdf24 tools ODT to PDF reads content.xml and its styles and writes a PDF with selectable text
The OpenDocument text structure, simplified.

Writer marks headings with an outline level (text:h with text:outline-level), so Heading 1 to Heading 6 come out as six sizes of bold type, from 22 pt down to 11 pt. Automatic styles that Writer creates when you press Ctrl+B or Ctrl+I are followed back to their parent style, so bold and italic survive even when they were applied by hand.

  • Password-protected .odt: Save As in Writer, untick Save with password.
